Goodbye (Face)book, Hello (Real)book

Well, I've done it. I've deleted my Facebook account. Maybe I'm now the only person on the face of the earth without Facebook... or a cell phone (gasp). It's not an indictment against those who have those things. It's just, in my opinion, an incredibly narcissistic waste of time.

That being said, people can still find me on Facebook as Tim and I have technically combined our accounts - so if you need to get in touch with me that way, you can contact me through Tim's account which now says "Tim Anne Lawson". I don't check it much, but Tim will know if you need to message me or invite me to something.

Is Facebook evil? Well, not unless you use it for evil purposes. But in my case, I'm getting rid of something good in exchange for something better - more time reading. I've got to start getting through these books and magazines before I become buried in them. I don't want books that sit on shelves unopened (although they are like old friends). I've come to a revelation: books that aren't read aren't any good to anybody.

So, I can't be distracted.

Are there things that are distracting you? Is the Internet itself too addictive? Are you addicted?

  2. I deleted my account just before they rolled out the timeline feature. I don't think Facebook is evil, but it did rob me of a lot of time I needed to be doing other things.

Many folks use it for good ministry purposes, I just wasn't one of them. I'm happier and more purposeful without Facebook.

    Blessings, Cristy

    1. Cristy,

Glad to hear I'm not alone!

I do find, now, that I spend more time reading blogs - perhaps to scratch the itch of needing to know what people are doing and saying and thinking about on a daily basis. So I don't know what I think about that, other than I think blogs are more thoughtful and slightly less addicting.

Have you spent more time reading blogs after deleting Facebook?

    2. Yes, I read more blogs now (I read hardly any before), but it doesn't seem to drain nearly as much time as Facebook did.

The blogs seem more finite (I follow a limited number using Bloglines) while Facebook has no end!

I find, too, that I'm reading more books as well. Life is good!

  4. Thanks for giving me something to think about post-graduation! I, too am buried in books I've bought all through my college career.
But the reason I wanted to comment is to say that I also think you should be WRITING your book....I've already titled it for you :)

  5. I thought I had already told you, but I'll remind you...
yours that you'll write alone is going to be called "The Way it is" by Anne Lawson...
and then you and Tim need to write one together:
"Raising Good Children: For the 5 billion or so who have no clue."
